Instead of that approach, now I create all the characters on paper before I ever start the book. I know their height, weight, favorite color and even their shoe size. They are my friend or an antagonist before I even type the first word of the story. By doing this, I know exactly what they would do in a given situation. I can use them not only more effectively, but I know how they act and don't have to think about it when I put the pen to page. I highly suggest that for those of you who don't use this approach, you should try it. It has added quality to my writing, as well as speed. Both of these things are important and helpful for me. I hope it helps you as well.
